Thanksgiving Baby

I knew this labor would be fast. My girls were born after 8 and 4 hours of labor respectively. Only a few minutes of pushing each time. I was joking about not making it to the hospital in time…little did I know how close we came!

It started Wednesday before Thanksgiving. My underwear was wet all day even though my midwife doesn’t think my water was leaking. Yeah right!

I was getting ready for our first Thanksgiving in our new house. After dinner I took my girls to Walmart for a few last minute things. I just wasn’t feeling right. I can’t explain it but I was uncomfortable and just didn’t want to walk around any more. I left a prescription at the pharmacy and drove home.

My “E” light came on and I knew I should get gas.

I even thought “Yeah, I could go into labor in the middle of the night and my car will be out of gas.” Well, I just didn’t even feel like doing that. I thought of sending my fiance out for gas when he got home but he already had to stop at Walmart to pick up my Rx and I thought, “What are the chances I’d have this baby tonight?”

I managed to get most of the house clean before going to bed.  I left the bathroom to clean and the upstairs to mop until morning. I took an Ambien to help me sleep. At around 2:30 I woke up. It was strange as the Ambien helped me sleep the other nights. My finance turns over and says “That baby will be here soon, won’t it?” I thought it was strange as I didn’t even feel any hard contractions.

The rest of the story gets a little blurry.

I got out of bed and took a shower and my contractions started. We called my midwife at about 3:30 and she said to call her when we were ready to go to the hospital. We called my parents and they were on their way.  I remember it felt like it took them forever. Looking back I know realize that my contractions went from 0 to 9 on the pain scale right away and I was in very active labor fast. I got very inward and when I wasn’t in the middle of a contraction I felt like I was sleeping. I sat on the toliet a lot until it was time to go. I remember hearing that that is a great place for you to be when in active labor.

The postion really helps for some reason.

Anyway, my parents got here at about 4:30, we called the midwife back and told her we were on our way. i went into my girls room and said good bye to my oldest. I looked down at my youngest daughter in the bottom bunk and I knew I couldn’t bend over. I figured I’d see her soon enough and my dad and my oldest would explain it to her.

We got in the car and I felt like I was sleeping for 10 minutes at a time. I remember hearing my mom say that my contractions were about 3 minutes apart, I couldn’t believe it. We quickly got some gas and got to the hospital. My midwife walked in right behind us, it was about 5 am.

They took me into tiage and put me on the monitor. My midwife checked me and I was 7 cm, as she checked me, my water broke. They took me over to the labor and delivary room and I went into the bathroom. The nurse told me not to have the baby in the toliet.

When i got out, my midwife had the birthing ball on the bed. I thought she was crazy wanting me to get up on it. I managed to and it really helped. Every time I had a contraction, I rolled up with the ball and got through it. They asked if I felt like pushing, I didn’t too much but thought what the heck. I pushed and then my midwife checked me. I was 9 cm.

She asked me to get on my side and I pushed again. We were then ready to push the baby out. They helped me on my back and got my legs up. I pushed 3 really hard pushes. Suddenly my mom and my fiance were over me saying “It’s a boy!!!!” I remember feeling confused for a second. What? The baby was really out already? Oh cool!! It was 6:12 am and they placed my baby boy on me.

My Thanksgiving was postponed until the next night but I had more to be thankful than ever!!!
