The Benefits Of Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding is truly one of the best things you can do for your new baby. Not only does it provide a special time for you to bond with your newborn, but it also provides ample nutrition that formulas and substitutes just can’t match. But what other benefits does breastfeeding offer? We’ve taken the time to break down why new mothers should consider breastfeeding and how doing so can improve the lives of both mother and child. Don’t believe me? Read on. Breastfeeding is fantastic for everyone and the following benefits show exactly why that is the case. Colostrum One of the best reasons to have a breastfed baby is to ensure he or she gets colostrum. This substance is yellowish in color and produced at the end of pregnancy and after birth. It’s a thick breast milk that contains a high amount of nutrients and antibodies that are essential for …

Breastfeeding Covers

Deciding to breastfeed your child is a wonderful gift. After all, you’re providing your baby with the nourishment he needs right from birth. And unlike formulas, breast milk is specifically designed to provide the nutrients your baby needs. It’s a custom formula, if you will. Even so, some new mothers might feel self-conscious about the prospect of breastfeeding in public. But what can you do? If you’re out and about and baby needs to eat, it’s either throw modesty aside or use a breastfeeding cover up. What Are Breastfeeding Covers? Breastfeeding covers are essentially fabric aprons that cover your breasts as you nurse. These covers give you some privacy, even when out in public, but don’t make it so you have to leave social situations. You can continue to be a part of the group and carry on a conversation and breastfeed at the same time without feeling awkward. The …

There are things you can do, and I intend to help. I post a lot of opinions and thoughts on My Blog section …

Why Is My Baby Crying?

So you’ve made it through nine months, giving birth and now you have a newborn at home. Newborns cry when they are hungry, have to burp, when they’re cold, and sometimes for no good reason. Most of the time, babies will tell you why they are crying by their body language. Learning to read your baby’s cues will save you a lot of aggravation. The two easiest cues to read are hunger cries and burp me cries. When a newborn is hungry, they will often try rooting. Rooting means they will turn their head with their mouths open trying to find food. Also, if you offer a crying baby your finger and they suck hard on it, chances are your baby is hungry. When newborns start crying and moving their body around a lot, especially their legs, and even turn red in the face, they probably have gas. If you …

These People Should NOT Be Parents

There was an article in our local paper on Sunday. It was about a 3 year old boy and a grocery store called Shoprite. Basically, this white trash Nazi family is pissed off at Shoprite because they wanted to get their son a birthday cake and Shoprite refused to put the name on the cake. Why? The boy’s name is Adolf Hitler Campbell. Shoprite did agree to write “Happy Birthday” and leave a blank for the name to be filled in later. The parents are 25 and 30 and both are living off disability for “bad backs”. Their house is full of Nazi paraphernalia and their other kids are named Joycelynn Arayn Nation and Honszlynn Hinler Jeannie Campbell. The parents claim their kids will not be brought up hating anybody and they “are just names”.  However, the father admits to being raised by guardians who taught him to distrust blacks …

Breastfeeding May Make Other’s Uncomfortable BUT…

My son is now over two weeks old. We’ve been visiting relatives, to stores, and out to eat. Guess what? My baby has to eat when we’re out. I don’t think much of breastfeeding in public. In fact, my family has always been so cool about breastfeeding that it’s hard for me to realize that not all of society accepts it. I have no problem breastfeeding at a table. In fact, I have no problems breastfeeding in front of my dad or my 14 year old nephew. At this point. I do put a blanket over me and the baby when we are out. Since he is so young yet, sometimes he needs help latching on, epically if we are somewhere with different noises. So for now, I use the blanket. When he is older, I will be able to discreetly lift part of my shirt. Anyway, I in no …

Woman Breastfeeding in Pool

There is a story that made headlines recently involving a woman breastfeeding her baby in a private pool.  She was outraged when the staff asked her to leave the pool to nurse her baby.  You can read the entire story here: http://www.cbc.ca/canada/toronto/story/2008/11/13/breastfeeding-pool.html This woman irritates me and gives nursing a bad name. First of all, as one person pointed out, nursing your baby after swimming in a pool is rather gross. You are putting chemicals and other people’s germs into your baby’s mouth by not showering first.  I do agree with this statement to a point but if your baby is swimming in the pool too, chances are the baby already managed to get pool water in it’s mouth so this doesn’t bother me too much. Second, it does bother me when people do just whip their breasts out in public. I can’t imagine she was covered up at all …

Nebraska (and others) Safe Haven Laws

I need to take a minute and address something very alarming. I read about this a few months ago and it has bothered me ever since.  I am talking about the Safe Haven Laws. I believe almost every state has them, however, Nebraska has been under media attention lately because of the age limit loophole they left in the law.  Basically, the safe haven laws are set up so people can drop off their newborns without getting prosecuted. Well, Nebraska left out the age part and a lot of teenagers have been getting dropped off. The state legislature has decided to change the drop off age to 30 days in order to stop older children from being abandoned. http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/11/19/nebraska.safe.haven/ I have trouble with all of this.  First of all, it is very concerning that parents of teenagers and older children are feeling so overwhelmed they felt like they need to …

Breast Milk Cures A Man’s Cancer…What’s Next?

There is a man is Massachusetts who says that drinking breast milk cured his prostate cancer.  Read the article: http://cbs11tv.com/watercooler/Health.mothers.breast.2.284289.html Some people now worry that the milk they are donating will end up going to adults with cancer instead of babies. I am having mixed feeling about this. On one hand, yes the milk we donate should go to babies if that’s what we believed it would be going for. On the other hand, this might be exactly what the breast feeding community needs.  If more and more proof comes about regarding breast feeding’s benefits for adults, then maybe the government will step in.  Now, I also think the government stepping in is not always the best thing; however in this case it might work.  If more people are encouraged to breast feed and more people are encouraged to donate breast milk, think about what that could mean.  Perhaps the …

Nesting?

Am I nesting? It is hard to tell. I’m 31 weeks now and I realize that I could have a baby in 6 weeks. That might not seem too soon but it is October 8th and I only have about 4 days with “nothing” scheduled left in October.   And by nothing, I am not counting taking my kids to and from school, food shopping, blogging and my daily housework.  Also, I might have another midwives appointment before the end of October. Then November, I will have a bunch of midwife appointments and I already have something going on about ten days already so that brings us to six weeks. The baby’s room is nowhere near ready and I still need to collet some baby things that I have gotten rid of. Oh my God… So, this week I have been washing baby blankets, car seats, and the like.  I have …
