Why Did I Decide To Breastfeed?

I was pregnant with my oldest daughter and my older sister said “You have to read this book. No matter what you are planning on doing, read it.” It was a really cute book called “so That’s What They’re for.” When she gave it to me, I realized I hadn’t even thought about breastfeeding or not, I think I just assumed I would. I didn’t know why I felt that way but I didn’t see any reason not to either. So, I read the book and I went from “yeah I’ll breastfeed for some reason” to “oh my God if I don’t breastfeed I am a bad mother”. After leaning all about the benefits breastfeeding has and all the bad junk formula has I couldn’t help my feelings.  The book is written in a really easy to read, fun way.  Which is great when your pregnant and sleepy.  I know …

Government Won’t Scare You With The Truth….

This has bugged me since I first heard about it. We have all seen graphic billboards about the dangers of drunk driving, drugs, and cigarettes. All of them seem to try and scare you into a certain healthier behavior. Well, our government has softened pro breastfeeding ads in the last few years. In 2007, the government was going to run ads of asthma inhalers and syringes with bottle tops on them, explaining that breastfed babies are less likely to have respiratory problems and develop diabetes. They softened the ads to show pictures of dandelions and ice cream instead. Apparently, they didn’t want to scare new mothers. What the heck?? They have no problem scarring everyone else. Here is the link to the Washington post article complete with the ads: Softening A Message – Washington Post This was not the first time and most likely won’t be the last time that …

Breastfeeding Is Gross

We live in a weird country. In most countries NOT breastfeeding is strange and open to ridicule. Here, there is controversy over breastfeeding. I like to think its getting better but it all depends on where you live and who you talk to. I have stated before that no matter what you do as a parent, there will be someone who criticizes you. We all are going to have these stories and I’ll probably post more but this is one that has been on my mind for a while. I work in a nursing home. I am a certified butt wiper, okay a nurse’s aide. Basically though I wipe butts for a living. One night I was at work and a day shift nurse stayed since we were short handed. She could only stay half the shift as it was the first time she was away from hew newborn for …

Donate My Milk?

I am thinking about donating milk. I have never done this before but I should. There are several places that will take you as a donor after a screening process. Some places keep your milk in the country and use for premature babies in the United States and some send your milk to Africa. It looks like there isn’t a minimum about they expect from you. And seriously, what do I have to lose? I can pump once a day and then have to mail it out once a month. Yeah it’s something else I will have to do but I will be helping other babies. I am looking into it and I will post more about this later. Seeing pictures like this, how could I not want to help?
