Selma Hyak Shares Her Milk With African Baby

I never thought much about Selma Hyak before. I don’t think I can name any of her movies off the top of my head. I do enjoy the role she’s had on 30 Rock lately.  However, she has now become one of my personal heroes.  While in Africa, she met a sick baby who needed to be breastfed. So, she did what any good nursing mother should do, she nursed that baby. When talking about her experience, she explains that her great grandmother did something similar and she felt like it was the right thing to do. However, this act of kindness has gotten all sorts of comments.  Some people are actually kind of appalled by this.  Others, ignorant about how breastfeeding works, actually accuse her of stealing milk from her own baby. In my opinion, she is a true hero. She gave that baby some much needed nutrition.  Watching …

Denny’s Breastfeeding Mom Asked To Leave

The story of a  woman breastfeeding in a North Carolina Denny’s who was asked to leave is making headlines all across the country. She was enjoying her brunch when other patrons got upset.  The manager asked her to leave or finish breastfeeding in the bathroom and she refused.  The manager then called the police and learned the woman was not breaking any laws. The first report I read said that other patrons claimed she was very exposed. However, I am not certain how true this is. I have also heard reports that the baby in question was around 2 years old, which might have caused the offensive. When I nurse in public I try to be discrete and I do believe nursing a 2 year old mid morning is a little excessive.  However, why on earth was this woman harassed? She did nothing at all wrong. I have nursed at …

Being Sick and Breastfeeding

It’s that time of year. Everyone is sick. In my house we’ve passed around a cold for about a month now. The good news is, you do not have to stop breastfeeding just because you are sick. My little guy did come down with a cold but it wasn’t too bad. Most newborns who are being nursed have a higher immune system which prevents them from coming down with more serious things such as strep. When you are sick, however, you need to becareful about what medicine you take. Here is a list from babycenter.com regarding what drugs are safe and what aren’t safe. As always, you should consult you doctor before taking anything but here is a general guideline. Stay healthy! Safe to Take in Usual Doses Name of Drug Brand Name Use Acetaminophen Tylenol Used for pain relief Acyclovir Zovirax Antiviral for herpes infections Antacids Maalox, Mylanta Used …

Chriopractors And Newborns

I have stated before that I am leery of general medicine doctors. I also believe  measures and preventative health-such as breastfeeding. I was raised in a house that made it a point to get to the chiropractor at least a few times a year. I have been adjusted since I was a newborn. As an adult, I have slacked off a bit do to insurance problems and lack of money and life getting too busy. Unfortunately, I did not get there at all during my pregnancy, a time which myself and my son could’ve used it most. First, I must say that I am a firm believer in regular chiropractic care. I am the youngest of four girls and until my oldest sister was about 12, my family didn’t go to a chiropractor. When my oldest sister was about 12, she got very sick and missed a lot of school. …

Too Lazy To Bottle Feed, Too Tired To Breastfeed-Nursing At Night

The hardest part about having a baby, kids for that matter, is having to wake up at night. Yes as they get older, it gets easier and you won’t be waking up as much. What about now? Nights are tough for me. I am lucky (knock on wood) that my son only wakes up about twice a night but it’s still hard. What can you do to make it easier? First, you can nurse laying on your side. Unfortunately, my son is still to young to master this. He usually ends up getting mad and I have to sit up anyway. Hopefully in a few more weeks, he’ll be able to do this.  I must warn everyone that this can be a bit dangerous. With my girls, I remember waking up and finding my breast still exposed and a baby laying in my arms.  The possibility to fall back asleep …

Why Is My Baby Crying?

So you’ve made it through nine months, giving birth and now you have a newborn at home. Newborns cry when they are hungry, have to burp, when they’re cold, and sometimes for no good reason. Most of the time, babies will tell you why they are crying by their body language. Learning to read your baby’s cues will save you a lot of aggravation. The two easiest cues to read are hunger cries and burp me cries. When a newborn is hungry, they will often try rooting. Rooting means they will turn their head with their mouths open trying to find food. Also, if you offer a crying baby your finger and they suck hard on it, chances are your baby is hungry. When newborns start crying and moving their body around a lot, especially their legs, and even turn red in the face, they probably have gas. If you …

These People Should NOT Be Parents

There was an article in our local paper on Sunday. It was about a 3 year old boy and a grocery store called Shoprite. Basically, this white trash Nazi family is pissed off at Shoprite because they wanted to get their son a birthday cake and Shoprite refused to put the name on the cake. Why? The boy’s name is Adolf Hitler Campbell. Shoprite did agree to write “Happy Birthday” and leave a blank for the name to be filled in later. The parents are 25 and 30 and both are living off disability for “bad backs”. Their house is full of Nazi paraphernalia and their other kids are named Joycelynn Arayn Nation and Honszlynn Hinler Jeannie Campbell. The parents claim their kids will not be brought up hating anybody and they “are just names”.  However, the father admits to being raised by guardians who taught him to distrust blacks …

Breastfeeding May Make Other’s Uncomfortable BUT…

My son is now over two weeks old. We’ve been visiting relatives, to stores, and out to eat. Guess what? My baby has to eat when we’re out. I don’t think much of breastfeeding in public. In fact, my family has always been so cool about breastfeeding that it’s hard for me to realize that not all of society accepts it. I have no problem breastfeeding at a table. In fact, I have no problems breastfeeding in front of my dad or my 14 year old nephew. At this point. I do put a blanket over me and the baby when we are out. Since he is so young yet, sometimes he needs help latching on, epically if we are somewhere with different noises. So for now, I use the blanket. When he is older, I will be able to discreetly lift part of my shirt. Anyway, I in no …

How Do I Wake My Baby To Nurse?

Did you ever hear “Never wake a sleeping baby”? Well, that’s not always the case. Sometimes you will need to wake your baby to start nursing or in the middle of nursing. This is not always the easiest task. My son is one of those babies who really likes to sleep. Here are some tips on waking your baby. 1.Make Him Cold- Babies love being warm and need to be kept warm. However, it is fine to make your baby cold in order to eat.  Unwrap the blankets, take off the hat and even take off his clothing. 2. Change His Diaper- This goes along with making him cold. This is great to wake him during the feeding. Your baby will probably have soiled itself during the first half of the feeding anyway, so changing his diaper takes care of two things at once. 3. Flick His Heels- My mom …

How Do I Work Around My Newborn’s Schedule?

I already discussed how often newborns should eat and my answer is as often as a baby wants.  However, what does that really mean? Does it mean I am locked inside my house for the next 6 months waiting for my baby to tell me he’s hungry? No way! I am out and about, taking my older kids to school, going food shopping. finishing my Christmas shopping.  I am doing what I need to do. And I am getting used to having to work around a newborn. Yes, it is hard sometimes, knowing that my clock is ticking before my nice quiet baby turns into a crying monster. However, it’s just an adjustment. First of all, you will find that your baby will most likely sleep longer then usual when it’s nice and warm and moving around in it’s car seat.  This buys you extra time right there. Second, make …
